Blackberries grow wild on bramble bushes and are cultivated during the months of late summer and early fall. This purplish-black berry is made up of many small sections containing tiny seeds. It is larger and firmer than its cousin, the raspberry, and is crossbred with the raspberry in America to produce the tart, reddish-black loganberry.
Although they are one of the firmer berries, blackberries are delicate; they should be rinsed lightly and used within a short time of picking. It is preferable to soften blackberries by cooking them, which also enhances their flavor. Blackberries are commonly purÄed and preserved, used as a filling for tarts, or in syrups and liqueurs. They are high in vitamins B and C.
